Let's highlight some of the amazing artists that made August's Liminal Space event possible!

Artist Spotlight 1: Old Collage Try

Old Collage Try is an analog collage artist whose work reflects the retro nostalgia of the 70's and 80's through surreal landscapes. All original collage artwork is handmade, non-digital, and created from rare & vintage materials that have been collected over the years from all along California. Items are made with love in Santa Cruz.

"Collaging is like a treasure hunt for me! Sorting through forgotten material and rediscovering lost memories brings a very personal aspect to the creative process. There's the sustainability part of creating something new from something discarded, and then there's the part where the artist cycles back parts of history, culture, and nostalgia into the public view again - I love all sides of it and I think there's nothing more exhilarating!"

Artist Spotlight 2: Gabrielle Gangitano

Gabrielle brought an experiential installation, the Fairy Cloud Tent!

Gabrielle has been building experiences through theatre, music, and is now harnessing the power of immersive installations to bring atmospheric chill space to events like the Santa Cruz regional burning man (UnScruz), and Airpusher's SF burning man fundraiser.

Artist Spotlight 3: Andy Pankakes

Andy's brought his wild style and diverse grooves for a unique spaced-out collab with Weston a.k.a. Swayor!

Andy Pankakes is a maverick in his field. His infectious energy and melodies will have you on your feet singing along and leave you squirming on the floor in laughter and tears. Seemlessly blending an eclectic mix of genre from Soul/Funk/Hip-Hop/R+B to Folk/Americana to good ol' Rock n' Roll, Mr. Pankakes has created his own sound which he dubs "Breakfast Music." It's music you want to wake up to, then eat for lunch and dinner. Carefully crafted guitar lines dance between syrupy keyboard harmonies, funky bass thump and smooth buttery drum grooves.

Artist Spotlight 4: Dan Hoffman

Dan ran the Alchemistry Corner in collaboration with Volta Labs to make bismuth art! He also set up a glass installation and vended some of his insane art during August's Liminal Space.

Dan Hoffman is a glass artist based in Santa Cruz who specializes in making some of the smallest scale borosilicate glass art in existence. His body of work is deeply inspired by experiences (both inside and outside the classroom) studying Chemistry at UCSC, and he focuses on making accurate models of organic molecules and geometric relationships found in nature

Artist Spotlight 5: Avi David Sinai

Avi is a Liminal Space OG, and always brings great vibes and diverse skills. At our August gathering, he did caricatures and some live drumming.

Avi makes artworks, sells 3d art cards, custom apparel and prints. https://avidavidsinai.wixsite.com/artbombs

Artist Spotlight 6: Volta Labs

Volta Labs ran the Alchemistry Corner in collaboration with Dan Hoffman to make bismuth art!

Utilizing the natural world along with the magic of electrochemistry, Volta Labs makes robust metal jewelry out of locally sourced plant parts & organic items. Also dabbling in collaboration work and exploring other applications of the medium, Volta will be giving a live demonstration of the electroforming process.

Artist Spotlight 7: Clayton

Clayton brought beautiful flurries of melodies and emotion, and hosted an open mic for audience members to read poetry along with live music. Community members brought poems, both serious and playful, to the set.

Inspired by the sonic aether that is My Bloody Valentine, Clayton’s sound coalesces instinctively with bossa nova rhythms, accented by intricate, alt-folk/baroque-esque harp-like motifs like those of Joanna Newsom. It is fey though unassuming guitar playing with an Elysian quality, but one that is firmly grounded. A sonic landscape is produced, that expresses a searing awareness of the evanescence of life—with the poised intent to heal.

Artist Spotlight 8: Kiara

Kiara ran a face painting and bodypainting station, and vended her creations.

"hello!! i’m katlyn/kiara/blu and I love all types of colorful things, including making people colorful which is why on top of jewelry and art prints I also do facepainting!"

Artist Spotlight 9: Clare

Clare brought their comfy and stylin' crochet clothing, as well as a community knitting project that guests contributed to!

Artist Spotlight 10: Tanner

Tanner brought live visuals to our event, including collaborations with other Liminal Space artists.

Tanner is a tinkerer and technologist, with an eye for whimsy, play, and aesthetics.

Artist Spotlight 11: Karina

Karina sold some of her original artwork and did henna for people at August's gathering. Thank you, Karina!

Karina is a multicultural, colorful artist who wields her pencil in her left hand at all times. Karina is continuously learning the trade and sharing art with friends. Digital art is her jam, traditional art is her love.

Artist Spotlight 12: Ben

Ben performed a set for us at our gathering. Thank you, Ben!

Ben is a sound artist and excavator, sifting through micro-samples and varieties of found sounds, physical and digital. They navigate the interstices of performance, collaboration, curation, and praxis with the intention of being as comfortable and explorative as possible, and having fun.
